Breast Reduction Q & A
What is breast reduction?
Breast reduction is a surgery to reduce the size, weight, and/or shape of your breasts. This procedure, also known as a reduction mammoplasty, is an option for women who have persistent neck or back pain due to heavy breasts.
You may also consider a breast reduction surgery if your large breasts cause:
- Posture issues
- Skin irritation
- Discomfort from tight bra straps
- Limitations in physical activities or sports
Breast reduction surgery may be right for you if you’re embarrassed by the size of your breasts or unhappy with your appearance because your breasts aren’t proportionate to the rest of your body.
What can I expect during breast reduction surgery?
As an expert in breast surgery, Dr. Lynch can determine which reduction techniques are necessary to resize your breasts. He customizes a surgical plan that focuses on reducing your pain and the other challenges you face due to the size and weight of your breasts.
For all reduction surgeries, you can expect to receive general anesthesia to keep you comfortable. Dr. Lynch makes an incision downward, starting from your areola. Through this incision, he removes excess breast tissue, fatty tissue, and skin, with minimal risk for scarring.
After reducing the amount of tissue in your breast, Dr. Lynch creates a more youthful-looking contour and breast size that suits your body shape. If you have very large breasts or breasts that sag severely, he may need to reposition your nipple and areola higher up on your breast to give you a more natural-looking appearance.
How long does it take to recover from breast reduction surgery?
Following breast reduction surgery, you can expect some discomfort, swelling, and bruising on and around your breast. These issues typically resolve on their own within a few days.
During your recovery, you will need to limit your activities for approximately 2 weeks, especially heavy lifting and strenuous exercise. Dr. Lynch will collaborate with you to determine when you can return to the most strenuous activities you enjoy.
